What is the recovery process after a Facelift? May 2, 2024 The initial recovery period after a Facelift typically involves mild to moderate swelling and bruising for the first 7 to 10 days. To minimize swelling and promote healing, a compression garment will be provided. Prescription medication may be prescribed by Dr. Downey or Dr. Bullocks to manage any discomfort you may experience. We also typically recommend for the first two weeks post-surgery that you sleep with your head elevated to help with reducing swelling. Most patients can return to work and resume light daily activities within one to two weeks after surgery. You should avoid direct sunlight exposure and refrain from using heavy makeup for three to four weeks following surgery to protect healing skin. Scars from surgery typically mature into thin, white lines that are easily concealed with makeup within approximately six weeks. At this point, you may gradually resume more strenuous physical activities and exercise routines. While initial improvements will be visible immediately, the full effects will become most apparent once swelling subsides and incisions have completely healed, typically at around three to four months.
