If you have loose or saggy skin anywhere on your lower body, you may want to look into having a lower body lift procedure. This type of surgery is used to tighten the skin in various areas of the lower body, including the thighs, hips, and buttocks. Many people opt to have this procedure done in combination with other skin tightening procedures such as tummy tucks or liposuction. The scars that result from a lower body lift can be easily hidden by clothing or the natural folds of the body. Special sutures are used to close the incisions to minimize noticeable scarring.
What Happens During a Lower Body Lift Procedure?
No matter which area of the lower body this procedure is performed on, the basic mechanics are the same. Dr. Downey will create an incision that goes all the way around the patient, also termed “Belt Lipectomy”. Any excess skin and fat are removed from these areas and the remaining skin and fat tissue is smoothed out and repositioned to give the patient a tighter looking lower body. Due to the nature of this procedure, it is necessary to have the patient lie on their stomach or side for most of the surgery. The incision is closed using layered sutures, which help to ensure that the tissue does not stray from its new position.
What Happens After a Lower Body Lift Procedure?
Before closing the incision, the surgeon will insert drainage tubes underneath the skin to allow excess fluid and blood to drain from the wound as you heal. Patients must wear special compression suits to reduce the swelling and to keep the tissue in position. Your surgeon will typically want to see you each week in order to follow up with your healing progress and ensure that there are no infections or complications. On average, it takes about four weeks for the lower body lift incision to fully heal.
Who Should Have a Lower Body Lift Procedure?
A lower body lift is certainly not a procedure that is appropriate for everyone. People who make good candidates for this surgery are those who have excessively loose skin on their buttocks, hips, and thighs that cannot be resolved by exercise and people who have lost large amounts of weight and have excess skin as a result. Your surgeon will be able to determine if a lower body lift is right for your situation during your first consultation.

Things to Consider before Having a Lower Body Lift
Many people opt to have lower body lifts performed after they have lost significant amounts of weight. It is important to wait to have this procedure done after the patient has reached their ultimate goal weight. If the surgery is performed when the patient still has more weight to lose, they could end up with more loose skin in the future that could require another lower body lift procedure.
Lower body lifts are a relatively safe and common procedure. If you have excessive loose skin on your lower body, this procedure may be right for you. The chances of serious complications are relatively low and you should be able to resume normal activity after six weeks.
