Advanced ENT Treatments in Houston

Ear. Nose. Throat.

The “Breathing” Disconnect

We see it every day in the Greater Houston area. A patient walks in exhausted. They are relying on nasal sprays to get through the work week. They wake up with a dry mouth, forcing them to drink water constantly throughout the night. They have been treated for chronic allergies or frequent sinus infections for years, yet the facial pressure and nasal obstruction never actually go away.

They have seen other physicians. They have tried the medications. But they are still suffering.
At Heights Plastic Surgery, we approach ENT care differently. We go after the root cause. Dr. Megan Swonke is a fellowship-trained specialist in Otolaryngology—the complex medical discipline of the Ear, Nose, and Throat. This dual expertise allows us to bridge the gap between medical ENT conditions and surgical structural correction.
We don’t believe you should have to choose between a nose that looks good and a nose that works. We ensure patients receive the full spectrum of care, from the precise diagnosis of airway issues to the effective treatment of the underlying anatomy.

What are Advanced ENT Treatments?

Advanced ENT treatments are the medical and surgical interventions designed to resolve chronic disorders of the head and neck that limit your quality of life.

This isn’t just about handing out antibiotics for a sinus infection. It is about using advanced techniques to physically alter the structures causing your misery—whether that is a deviated septum blocking your airflow, nasal polyps filling your sinuses, or collapsing valves that make difficulty breathing a nightly struggle.

The “Silent Epidemic” in Houston

Living in the Texas Medical Center region means living in one of the allergy capitals of the world. But how do you know if it’s just allergies or something structural?

We tell new patients: Allergies make you itch and sneeze. Structural issues make you feel blocked. If you feel like you are breathing through a coffee stirrer, no amount of Claritin is going to fix a crooked septum.

We see many patients who are misdiagnosed with chronic sinusitis when, actually, they have a collapsed nasal valve. This is why board-certified expertise matters. ENT specialists like Dr. Swonke look at the nose as a dynamic machine, not just a static tunnel.

What conditions do we treat?

While many associate our practice with aesthetics, our foundation is in functional sinus health and head and neck anatomy. We provide expert care for a wide range of issues.

Chronic Sinus & Nasal Issues

This is the core of our functional practice. When the sinuses cannot drain, sinusitis becomes a recurring nightmare. We treat:

  • Deviated Septum: The wall between your nostrils is crooked, blocking one side.
  • Turbinate Hypertrophy: The “humidifiers” inside the nose are too large, causing constant nasal congestion.
  • Nasal Polyps: Non-cancerous growths that block the passages, often leading to a loss of smell and sinus pressure.
  • Chronic Sinus Infections: When you’ve had more than four infections in a year, it’s time to look for an anatomical cause.

Sleep & Airway Disorders

Obstructive sleep apnea is not just about snoring; it is a serious health risk that stresses the heart. While CPAP therapy is the gold standard, many patients cannot tolerate the machine because their nose is blocked.

  • We perform nasal surgery to allow CPAP therapy to work better, or in some cases, to reduce the severity of sleep apnea so patients can sleep freely.
  • We treat snoring caused by nasal obstruction, helping both the patient and their partner get better sleep.

Throat and Neck Conditions

Dr. Swonke’s training covers the entire throat ear and neck region.

  • Swallowing disorders: We evaluate the structural causes of dysphagia.
  • Neck Cancer & Lesions: We perform excisions and, crucially, the reconstruction after neck cancer removal to minimize scarring and restore form.
  • Throat conditions: From chronic tonsillitis to structural abnormalities.

Pediatric & Adolescent ENT

We understand that pediatric patients are not just small adults. Their anatomy is growing. Whether it is a teenager needing a functional rhinoplasty for a sports injury or evaluation for chronic breathing issues, we offer a gentle, personalized approach for younger patients.

Am I a candidate for Advanced ENT Surgery?

We are very protective of our patients. We disqualify people who are not ready for the reality of surgery.

We might turn you away if:

  1. You are seeking a “Magic Wand” for Allergies: Surgery fixes structure. It does not cure the immune system. If you have severe environmental allergies, you will still need allergy treatments after surgery. We fix the bent pipe; we don’t change the water flowing through it.
  2. You have unmanaged underlying health issues: If you have uncontrolled diabetes or heart disease, elective surgery is too risky.
  3. You want “Laser Only” for a Major deformity: Sometimes, cutting edge technology isn’t the answer. A laser cannot straighten a severely twisted bone. Sometimes, you need actual surgery.

Your Treatment: Advanced Techniques & Technology

We don’t use the “slash and burn” methods of the past. ENT care has evolved.

The Diagnostic Phase

It starts with a consult. We use precise diagnosis tools, often including nasal endoscopy (a tiny camera) to look deep inside the nose. We need to see the nasal obstruction with our own eyes. We may order a CT scan to look at the sinus cavities.

The Procedure Options

Depending on the root cause of your issue, we customize the plan:

  • Septoplasty: Straightening the septum.
  • Inferior Turbinate Reduction: Shrinking the swollen tissue (often using radiofrequency or careful excision) to open the airway without causing “Empty Nose Syndrome.”
  • Functional Rhinoplasty: Using cartilage grafts to spread the nasal valves open, stopping them from collapsing when you inhale.
  • Balloon Sinuplasty: For specific candidates, this less invasive option uses a small balloon to gently dilate the sinus openings, providing sinus relief without cutting tissue.

The “Ouch” Factor: Real Talk on Pain

Let’s be honest about the recovery. New patients often fear the pain of sinus surgery because of stories from the 1990s.

The Reality:

It is rarely sharp pain. It is pressure.

Imagine the worst head cold you’ve ever had. You feel congested. You feel headaches or pressure behind the eyes for about 3 days.

Most of our patients switch to Tylenol within 48 hours.

The Packing Myth:

We rarely use the old-school distinct “nasal packing” that blocks your nose completely. We use internal splints that allow air to pass through. You will not have that terrifying moment of having yards of gauze pulled out of your nose.

Recovery & Results

Lasting relief requires patience during the healing process.

  • Week 1: You are congested. You are tired. You are watching Netflix.
  • Week 2: The splints come out. This is the “Wow” moment. The air rushes in. You might breathe through your nose clearly for the first time in years.
  • Month 1: Swelling persists but is fading. You are back to the gym.
  • Long Term: The goal is a permanent improvement in quality of life. Better sleep. Fewer headaches. No more panic when you realize you left your nasal spray at home.

Why Choose Heights Plastic Surgery for ENT Care?

You have many choices for ENT associates and doctors in Houston. Why come to a plastic surgery practice for sinus issues?

The Aesthetic Eye:

Most ENT specialists are brilliant at function but may not prioritize the external appearance of the nose. Dr. Swonke is trained in both. She ensures that fixing your deviated septum doesn’t result in a crooked nose. She treats the face as a whole.

A Personalized Approach:

We are not a high-volume “sinus mill.” We don’t push everyone toward balloon sinuplasty just because it’s quick. We spend time understanding your specific symptoms and lifestyle. We treat the person, not just the scan.

Continuity of Care:

From the initial diagnosis to the post-op checks, you see Dr. Swonke. You aren’t passed around to different mid-level providers. This is boutique medical care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does insurance cover these procedures?

Usually, yes. Procedures like septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and sinus surgery are considered medically necessary for chronic sinusitis or nasal obstruction. We will help you navigate the authorization process.

Can you fix my hearing loss?

While Dr. Swonke diagnoses many ear conditions, for sensorineural hearing loss requiring hearing aids, we work closely with audiologists. For structural ear issues (like keloids or repair), we handle the surgery.

Is Balloon Sinuplasty better than traditional surgery?

It isn’t “better”; it is different. It is great for opening the drainage pathways for mild to moderate sinusitis. However, it cannot fix a deviated septum or large polyps. We use it when it is the right tool, not the only tool.

Will this help my sleep apnea?

It often helps. While nasal surgery alone rarely “cures” severe sleep apnea, it makes CPAP therapy much more comfortable and effective, and it stops the mouth-breathing that contributes to snoring.
