In February 2016, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) released a data that shows the growth of cosmetic surgery in 2015. During this year, United States had over 15 million plastic surgery procedures. And 92 percent of those patients were women.
That said, here are the top five surgical cosmetic procedures popular among women:
Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammaplasty, helps increase the size or restore the volume of the breast. According to ASPS, it can help achieve the following:
- Increase the fullness and projection of your breasts
- Improve the balance of your figure
- Enhance your self-image and self-confidence
It involves either using breast implants or fat from other parts of your body. Implants are ideal if you’re looking for a large increase in breast size. Meanwhile, fat transfer can only achieve a limited increase in breast size.
The following can be candidates for a breast augmentation procedure:
- Women with well-developed breasts, but are bothered that they might be too small.
- Women who are not satisfied with the shape of their breasts
- Women with asymmetrical breasts
- Women with one or both of the breasts failed to develop normally
Bear in mind, though, that breast augmentation cannot correct drooping breasts. This kind of situation calls for a breast lift procedure.
Also called eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty helps improve the appearance of your eyelids. This includes treating the bags under the eyes or removing the excess fats that cause puffy eyelids.
A loose or sagging eyelid can disturb the natural contour of your eyes. Worst, it can impair your eyesight.
Aside from functional problems, blepharoplasty rejuvenates the area around your eyes. However, this is not meant for patients with serious eye problems.
Sometimes referred to as “lipo”, liposuction reshapes specific areas of the body to make it slimmer. This includes the thighs, hips and buttocks, uppers arms, and many more. This is done by removing excess fat deposits on the body part that you want to reshape.

ASPS defines rhinoplasty as a procedure that “enhances facial harmony and the proportions of your nose.” Moreover, it helps change the size of your nose in relation to facial balance. This includes:
- Nasal asymmetry
- Large, wide, or upturned nostrils
- Nose bridge with visible humps or depression
Aside from that, rhinoplasty also improves your breathing caused by the structural nasal defect.
One of the most common breathing problems is a deviated septum. The nasal septum is the part of your nose that separates the left and right airways. Adjusting the structure of the nose for better alignment is the best way to fix it. However, this surgery requires careful evaluation since it has something to do with airflow and breathing.
Also known as abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin. It also restores weakened or separated muscles to create a smoother and firmer abdomen.
Although a lot of people aim for a flat and well-toned midsection, sometimes you cannot achieve it by exercise and weight control alone. The loose and protruding abdomen is usually the result of the following:
- Prior surgery
- Significant weight loss and/or weight gain
This procedure is ideal if the appearance of your abdomen bothers you.
The results of a tummy tuck may be permanent, but it is not a substitute for weight loss or proper exercise. Additionally, it cannot correct stretch marks; although it can be removed if it’s part of the excised skin.
