What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure in which a patient’s nose is reshaped, otherwise known as a nose job. The reshaping may be performed for medical reasons to correct breathing issues, or simply to improve the overall appearance for cosmetic purposes.

What Does Rhinoplasty Do?

A rhinoplasty procedure will differ according to each patient’s specific situation. During rhinoplasty, a surgeon can change the size and width of the nose, correct humps on the bridge, alter the nasal tip, change the size and shape of nostrils, and fix any asymmetry or septum deviation.  Sometimes, prior to consulting with a plastic surgeon, a patient will experience trouble breathing or chronic congestion, in which case, a nose job would be a valid option.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Prior to the rhinoplasty procedure, either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation is administered. Incisions are made inside of the nose or across the tissue that separates the nostrils depending on the nature of the specific surgery. The structure of the nose is sculpted to the proper shape, skin and tissue is draped back over, then the incisions are closed. Splints and tubes are used to support the nose during the healing process and are generally removed after one week. Swelling will come and go for several weeks and a majority of the swelling will go down in 2 months after the nose job.

Who Are the Ideal Rhinoplasty Candidates?

A nose job is only suggested for patients who have realistic expectations for improving their nasal appearance and who are 13 years of age or older. Ideal candidates are also non-smokers and are otherwise physically healthy, allowing for proper healing after the nose job procedure.  Also, keep in mind that your surgeon should have an idea as to why you want to undergo the procedure.  Surgery to improve a blocked airway will require special attentions and a careful evaluation.
